iGate appoints ex-Infosys exec Ashok Vemuri as CEO

Ashok Vemuri, the head of Infosys' North American operations and a member of its board, has defected from India's second-largest software company to join iGate as its new chief executive officer.
The departure of Vemuri, who was regarded as a potential future CEO of Infosys, is another blow to a company which has been struggling for management stability. For iGate, it brings to an end its months-long search for a leader after the US-based company fired Phaneesh Murthy as CEO in May for not disclosing a sexual relationship with a colleague.
InfosysBSE -0.52 % announced Vemuri's resignation on Wednesday. Vemuri's acceptance of the offer from iGate was confirmed to ET by two people. In June, this newspaper reported that Vemuri was among those in discussions with Russell Reynolds Associates, the headhunting firm with the mandate to help iGate find a new CEO.
NR Narayana Murthy, who made a comeback to the under-performing Infosys as its chairman in June with his son Rohan as his executive assistant, described Vemuri, 45, as an "important player" in the growth of the company. Vemuri, who has been with Infosys for a decade and a half, did not consult him before taking a decision to resign, Murthy said in an email.

US-made Moto X‘s labour cost less than Galaxy S4

Motorola's new Moto X phone doesn't cost more to make simply because it's assembled in Texas, research firm IHS.
The Moto X is the first smartphone to carry the "Made in the USA" designation. Labor costs are higher in the US compared with Asian factories, where phones are typically made. But IHS said the Moto X is about 5 percent cheaper to make than Samsung Electronic's flagship Galaxy S4phone. The firm said the Moto X's overall production cost is just 9 percent more than that of Apple's iPhone 5.

The findings come as little surprise, as the labor cost of a phone is just a small part of its production cost. IHS estimates that labor and other assembly costs Motorola $12 per phone for the Moto X, bringing the production cost to $226. That compares with $207 for the iPhone 5 and $237 for the Galaxy S4. IHS said Motorola is able to keep the cost of parts low by using standard components that don't break much new ground.

Soon, make 3D video calls through Skype

Instant messaging and video-calling service Skype is reportedly working on the prospects of 3D video calling and the current limitations with the 3D technologies stopped the company from launching the feature.
Microsoft's corporate vice-president for Skype, Mark Gillett said that the lab experimentation has been done to analyse the capability of 3D screens and 3D capture.

Gillett said that there has been a lot of progress in screens and people have started to buy televisions and computer monitors capable of delivering 3D image, but there is a lack of 3D capture devices and the company has been working on just that, BBC reports.
According to the report, the vice-president said that Skype is working with the technology where multiple cameras need to be attached to the computer, precisely calibrate them and point them at the right angle and are now aiming at using that technology to make it work in practical with supporting devices.

Scientist controls another man's brain via internet

Scientists, including one of Indian-origin, have conducted the world's first non-invasive human-to-human brain interface in which one person was able to control the motions of another person via internet.
Using electrical brain recordings and a form of magnetic stimulation, Rajesh Rao, a University of Washington professor, sent a brain signal to his colleague Andrea Stocco, causing Stocco's finger to move on a keyboard.
While researchers at Duke University have demonstrated brain-to-brain communication between two rats, and Harvard researchers have demonstrated it between a human and a rat, Rao and Stocco believe this is the first demonstration of human-to-human brain interfacing.
"The Internet was a way to connect computers, and now it can be a way to connect brains. We want to take the knowledge of a brain and transmit it directly from brain to brain," Stocco, a research assistant professor in psychology at the UW's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, said.

Google Glass Isn’t Coming To Best Buy Next Year, And It Won’t Cost $299

Even though Google Glass is out in the wild and on the heads of around 10,000 people, there are still plenty of questions about it. For a long time now, we’ve heard that Glass would retail for $299. And earlier this week, unofficial Glass evangelist Robert Scoble put a bit more oil on the fire when he wrote on Google+ that Best Buy would rent out 6,000 square feet inside each one of its stores to Google to showcase Glass.

All of that sounds great — even though 6,000 square feet sounds like quite a lot — but Google’s Chris Dale, who runs comms for Google Glass, today put those rumors to an end. In a tweet, he noted that Glass isn’t coming to Best Buy in 2014, and that it won’t cost $299. We have verified with Dale that this is, indeed, his tweet and account. It wasn’t hacked.

Yahoo Acquires Image Recognition Startup IQ Engines To Improve Flickr Photo Organization & Search

Oh, so you thought Yahoo’s acquisition spree was over? Not even close. A Yahoo spokesperson has confirmed that the revitalized web giant has snapped up yet another company — this time it’s a image recognition startup called IQ Engines.

Yahoo has declined to disclose the terms of the deal, but the IQ Engines team confirmed in a statement on their website that they have been tapped to join the Flickr team where they will work on “improving photo organization and search for the community.”

IQ Engines first made a splash back in 2010 when it snapped up $1 million in funding for crafting an API that would allow its customers (think online retailers and app developers) to provide a visual search engine of sorts that could automatically categorize images on the fly. It later appeared at that year’s DEMO Conference, where our own Alexia Tsotsis picked it out as one of the show’s most impressive startups.

Big Data: An economic dud?

If pencil marks on some colossal doorjamb could measure the growth of the internet, they would probably be tracking the amount of data sloshing through the public network that spans the planet. Christened by the World Economic Forum as "the new oil" and "a new asset class", these vast loads of data have been likened to transformative innovations like the steam locomotive, electricity grids, steel, air-conditioning and the radio.
The astounding rate of growth would make any parent proud. There were 30 billion gigabytes of video, e-mails, Web transactions and business-to-business analytics in 2005. The total is expected to reach more than 20 times that figure in 2013, according to Cisco.
How much data is that? Cisco estimates that in 2012, some two trillion minutes of video alone traversed the internet every month. What is sometimes referred to as the internet's first wave — from the 1990s until around 2005 — brought completely new services like e-mail, the web, online search and eventually broadband.
For its next act, the industry has pinned its hopes, and its colossal public relations machine, on the power of Big Data itself to supercharge the economy.

LinkedIn eyes school students, lowers age requirement

LinkedIn will soon open up its online professional networking service to high school students as part of an effort to help steer their collegiate careers.

Effective September 12, the new minimum age to create a LinkedIn account will range from 13 years old to 16 years old in most countries where LinkedIn operates.

LinkedIn is lowering its age requirements so high school students can tap into a new feature, called University Pages, designed to help them learn more about colleges around the world and connect undergraduates with alumni. About 200 universities have already set up pages on LinkedIn, and the company said thousands of more schools will be given access to the new feature during the next few weeks.

By lowering its age requirements, LinkedIn will open up new growth opportunities that could help the company widen its usage and bring in more revenue. It doesn't cost money to set up a LinkedIn profile, but the Mountain View, California, company charges fees to gain additional access and insights into its membership. Linked also sells advertising space that becomes more valuable as its audience grows.

Samsung beats Nokia to emerge No.1 in India: Report

Buoyed by high demand for smartphones, the mobile handset market in India is estimated to have grown by 14.7% in 2012-13 to touch Rs 35,946 crore, according to a Voice&Data Survey.

The market grew from Rs 31,330 crore in FY'12 with Korean electronics maker Samsung dethroning Nokia from the top position this year, the survey said.

The 18th annual survey 'V&D 100' covered over 30 mobile handset companies doing business in India across categories like feature phones, multimedia phones, enterprise phones and smartphones.
The survey attributed Samsung's rise in Indian market to its rich product portfolio catering to customers of all budget categories.
"Samsung handset prices range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 50,000 and come in varied screen sizes. These two factors helped the company grab customer's attention, besides the product quality and new features," it added.
The survey said Samsung ended the year with revenues of Rs 11,328 crore in 2012-13 as compared to Rs 7,891 crore in FY'12, a growth of 43.6%. It also became the market leader with 31.5% market share.

How to turn off ads on Gmail

When Google introduced the new tabbed interface for Gmail, it also brought along some new ads under the Promotions tab.
The ads look a bit too much like legitimate emails, which is problematic for many users. However, they're also limited to the Promotions tab, which makes it super easy to turn them off if you want to avoid confusion. Here's how:
Click the Settings icon in the top right corner of the Gmail tab.
Select "Configure Inbox."
Deselect the "Promotions" tab and click Save.
Of course, if you want to keep the Promotions tab, there's not much you can do. You can also disable the tabs entirely by unchecking everything except ""Primary"" on this same menu, if you prefer.

Lenovo rides smartphones into post-PC era

Hewlett-Packard couldn't navigate the industry shift to mobile even with the acquisition of Palm. Dell tried the tablet game and Android for a bit to no avail. Acer and Asus ran with netbooks as everyone else sprinted to the iPad.
To date, no Windows PC player has been able to transform from a computer maker to a smartphone player. Apple is excluded, of course, since it basically invented the post-PC era with the iPad.
Enter Lenovo. The company's first-quarter results highlight a company that has used its brand in China to become a top-tier smartphone player. Lenovo's first-quarter mobile sales were 14 percent of total revenue. A year ago, mobile revenue was a blip. The story isn't that Lenovo's mobile shares have surged. The story is that Lenovo is the first PC maker that hasn't been completely blindsided by a mobile shift.
Rest assured, Lenovo is still a PC maker---52 percent of first-quarter revenue was laptop sales. The company reported first-quarter earnings of $174 million on revenue of $8.787 billion, up 10 percent from a year ago. Lenovo was powered by commercial sales and a unit surge that made the company the largest PC maker.

Samsung introduced the eight-core processor with its Galaxy S4 flagship smartphone, along with a quad-core version of the same device. Tech news website SamMobile, which has a stellar record of Samsung leaks, has revealed the list of the countries that will be getting the two models. Markets like India, where 4GLTEnetworks are not available presently, will get the Galaxy Note III with eight-core CPU (model number SM-N9005). On the other hand, countries where 4GLTE networks are present will get the variant powered by the 2.3GHz quad-core processor (model number SM-N9000).

Countries where both the variants will be launched are likely to get the quad-core version first. China will get a third version, which runs on the eight-core CPU and supports dual-simfunctionality.

NSA violated privacy rules thousands of times, audit finds

he National Security Agency exceeded its legal authority and broke agency rules thousands of times since it was granted broader powers in 2008, according to an internal agency audit obtained by The Washington Post.
Most violations involved unauthorized surveillance of Americans or foreign intelligence targets in the U.S., according to the documents, which were supplied to the newspaper by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. The documents show infractions ranging from serious legal violations to typographical errors that resulted in unintended data collection, The Post reported.
The agency was not always forthcoming with the details of its transgressions, the Post found. A quality assurance report not shared with an oversight committee found that a "large number" of calls were placed to Egypt 2008 when the U.S. area code 202 was mistakenly entered as 20. In another case, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which reviews NSA warrant requests, was not made aware of a new collection method until it had been in place for several months. The court ultimately ruled it unconstitutional, the Post reported.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, Enhanced Multiplayer Mode and Character Customization

The new Call of Duty multiplayer trailer has been revealed and the game will be released on November 5th. The latest installment in the series CoD: Ghosts, will not only feature the usual additions to weapons, maps and game modes, but will also allow players to customize their characters.
The main feature you can take away from the multiplayer trailer is the customization. Players can now create and personalize up to 10 soldiers, which they can customize with load-outs, gear, clothing and of course weapons. Activision stated the new customization allows players to come up with over 20,000 combinations and includes the newly added female character models.
Although Activision has surrounded their new engine with a lot of hype, IGN’s insider review states, “nothing about it [the game’s graphics] looks spectacular”. The game is definitely a step up from previous Call of Duty installments, but still lacks certain key elements players expect in a next-gen game. However, what the game seems to lack in visual effects, it more than makes up in audio. The audio work in Ghosts is considered exceptional and with dynamic map changes the game provides a sense of realism to players.

Why Google photo tools won‘t replace humans

It can take months, even years, for me to share photos from a trip. The more shots I take, the more I dread going through them to delete bad shots and perform tweaks such as brightening dark shots.
So I was intrigued when Google promised to automate much of this photo editing as part of enhancements to its Google+ social network.

You simply upload a batch of photos and Google will try to highlight the best ones and make them look their best. As a bonus, Google will turn a series of successive snapshots into an animation and stitch overlapping photos into a panoramic image. The original images are preserved, but hidden away.
I started my test by manually going through 270 photos taken during a spring weekend trip to Providence. I kept and tweaked 107 of them, mostly by cropping out distractions and adjusting brightness and contrast. I then chose 38 of the best to include in a photo album.
After that, I uploaded all 270 of the originals to see if Google would make the same creative choices I had. To try out other aspects of Google's tools, I also added a selection of shots from trips over the past year to Baltimore and Thailand and photos of Space Shuttle Enterprise's final journey last year atop a modified Boeing 747.
Google did a decent job for a virtual photo editor, but I'm not ready to cede creative control quite yet. It brightened shots of Edgar Allan Poe's gravesite, which I had purposely shot dark to appear more eerie. More importantly, the automated tools don't include cropping.

How to find a lost device that is in silent mode

I lost my tablet somewhere in my house and have been searching for hours. It's an Android device, which seems to have Wi-Fi-enabled (responds to pings), but doesn't seem to react to cloud-based messages. Furthermore, I have Cerberus installed on it, but cannot connect to it. Is there a way of physically finding the device by measuring the signal strength from different locations in my flat? I know it's theoretically also possible to triangulate a Wi-Fi signal, and even though I have four Linux based Wi-Fi receivers, I don't know any non-commercial software that is capable of doing so.

Plan B
Not a direct answer to your question, but Plan B app is specifically for situations where you've lost track of your Android device and didn't have any sort of "finder" app on it. Note: Plan B only works with Android 2.0-2.3.

iPhone 5S launch event reportedly happening on Sept 10

One month from today Apple will announce the iPhone 5S to the world at a press conference, according to a report today.
The iPhone 5S launch event is said to be scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10, claimed sources who spoke to AllThingsD.
Previous rumors point to the next smartphone having a bumped up processor, likely the Apple A6X or the A7, a better camera to compete with the 13-megapixel Samsung Galaxy S4, and superfast LTE-Advanced.
There's also a lot of anticipation surrounding a possible fingerprint sensor, which is thought to be used to unlock the smartphone in addition to other security-related functions.
One item on Apple's agenda we know about for sure regards hearing more details about the launch of iOS 7, its fresh take on the mobile operating system that was first unveiled in June.
Cheaper iPhone, too?
Also expected on stage at next month's Apple press conference is an all-plastic, cheap iPhone model, currently being called the iPhone 5C.
The rumored budget-friendly smartphone would be a first for the company, with leaked images pointing to multiple colors in addition to a cheaper price.
Photos purported to be from factories in China seem to indicate at least five colors: red, blue, yellow, green and white.

Fingerprints for sim cards: DoT examines proposal

The Department of Telecom is examining a proposal for making it compulsory for mobile operators to take fingerprint or any other biometric feature of the subscriber at the time of receiving application for a new mobile connection.

Minister of State for Communications and ITMilind Deora said DoT has recently received a suggestion from the Ministry of Home Affairs indicating that a central database be maintained by DoT of all subscribers which maintains biometric parameters akin to the Aadhaar system.

"As per this proposal, this would entail taking fingerprint/thumb impression or any other unique biometric feature of the subscriber when he/she applies for a mobile connection," Deora said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha.
He added the suggestion "is presently being examined in DoT and decision on the same is yet to be taken."
Strengthening the rules for taking a new mobile connection, the DoT last year came with tough guidelines which called for physical verification of facts provided by the subscriber.

5 Moto X features that rivals don‘t have

The one truly huge, magnificent, radical idea of the iPhone, back when it was introduced in 2007, was to get rid of buttons. Make the whole phone a black rectangular touchscreen.

By now, every company and its brother has done that. Everybody's added voice recognition, GPS and navigation. Everybody's sharpened up the screens to the point where you need a microscope to tell the difference.
So now what? How do you distinguish your phone from the more than 4,000 other touch-screen phones? (That's not a joke. There have actually been 3,997 different Android phone models so far. And six iPhones and a motley assortment of Windows and touchscreenBlackBerry phones. Heaven help the landfills.)
With much fanfare, Google proudly presents its answer: the Moto X.
This phone ($200 with contract, 5.1x2.6x0.4 inches) is the first that Motorola has produced since Google bought it a year ago for $12.5 billion.

By looking at it, you'd never guess that this is the Android phone that Motorola hopes will change everything. Its curved back is plasticky, not classy metal (like the HTC One) or glass (like the iPhone 5). Its comfortable 4.7-inch screen looks great, but it isn't as big or sharp as the SamsungGalaxy S4 and the HTC One. The phone is plenty fast, but its processor isn't the latest and greatest.

Facebook changes your News Feed again

Facebook's quest to be a personalized newspaper for the internet age continued on Tuesday with tweaks aimed at making sure members spy hot stories from their friends.

Changes to the leading social network's formula for figuring out which posts will be of interest included "bumping" up potentially intriguing stories that went unnoticed during prior visits to Facebook.
"It is hard for users to get back to old things; you have to scroll through things you have already seen," Facebook News Feed team engineeringLars Backstrom said while discussing the latest changes.
"We wanted to make it so people weren't missing important stories that didn't make top slots but were just below the fold."
Signals weighed in the machine learning algorithm were modified to bump-up a story considered more interesting than fresher material that formerly got priority simply for being newer.
"We tweaked the model," Backstrom said, noting that about 30,000 signals are balanced in the algorithm.
"Instead of just taking the new stories, we would take all stories that were new to you, that you haven't seen, even if it isn't the freshest."
A test of the change showed that the number of stories people read in News Feeds rose to 70% from 57% with "bumping," according to Facebook.

Apple Inc. Has Lost Its Lead, but It Still Sets the Scene in the Tablet Market

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android-based devices now dominates the segment, with 62.6% share of the market in the second quarter of 2013, compared to just 38% of the market in the same period last year, new data from International Data Corporation (IDC) shows. However, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) still calls the shots, even though its market share declined rapidly to 32.5% from 60.3%, according to IDC (or to 42.7% from 71.2%, according to Canalys).

Growth in the worldwide tablet market slowed in the second quarter of 2013, with volume down 9.7% from the first quarter but still up 59.6% year-to-year. Consumers are waiting for the new iPad to arrive, IDC says.

"A new iPad launch always piques consumer interest in the tablet category and traditionally that has helped both Apple and its competitors," said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets at IDC.

Russia seeking Snowden's help on data security

The upper house of Russia's parliament will invite ex-National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden to participate in a probe of how the privacy of Russian citizens is being violated by big Internet companies who, according to Mr. Snowden, allow the personal data of users of Facebook, Yahoo, Google, and other big global Internet companies to be accessed by a "third party."

Snowden, who was granted temporary asylum in Russia last week, may soon find himself acting as "Exhibit A" in a concerted Russian effort to beef up national electronic security and assert something lawmakers are calling "digital sovereignty" in the wake of the recent revelations about NSA Internet-snooping around the world.

"We want to find out from Snowden how this leaking of personal data happens. It's time to start working out measures to protect private information on the national and international level. I don't think he'll have to break any obligations or commitments to tell us what he knows," says Senator Ruslan Gattarov, head of the parliamentary commission on privacy rights. "We're not interested in relationships between governments or struggles between security agencies. We have no questions about what the NSA is getting up to. This is about the security of personal information; it concerns tens of millions of people in Russia and billions around the world," he adds.

Now, a social networking website for Indian children

Parents of seven-year-old Mehul Chowdhury were a worried lot after they found out that a paedophile stalker, who had befriended him on Facebook, was abusing their only child.

Ever since Worldoo.com was launched in April, more than 20,000 children have already signed in for the first of its kind online ecosystem designed specifically for Indian children, in the age group of 6-12.
Harsh Wardhan Dave, Head (Experience and Brand) of worldoo.com, says with an increase in the number of cases of child stalking and abuse they have put in multi-level security checks on their website.

Google launches Android KitKat with Nestlé collaboration and spoof Apple ad

Coinciding with its 15th birthday celebrations, Google have announced KitKat: the latest version of its Android mobile OS.

The search giants have traditionally named different versions of Android using a sweet theme in alphabetical order. The tradition started with Android Cupcake (version 1.5) back in 2009, before continuing through Donut, Eclair, Froyo (that’s ‘frozen yoghurt’), Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and, most recently, Jelly Bean (versions 4.1-4.3).

The naming is especially surprising as it had been previously thought that the next update would be ‘Key Lime Pie’. KitKat will be version 4.4 of Android, the operating system that now ships on nearly 80 per cent of smartphones worldwide.
