Indian IT doubles market share in 6 years

Indian IT outsourcers have more than doubled their share in total worldwide IT spends over the past six years, and the bigger Indian IT companies have outpaced their MNC counterparts over this period.

India IT companies accounted for $31 billion, or 4.8%, of the worldwide IT spending of $641 billion in 2006-07 . This year, it is estimated to be $77 billion, or 9.8%, of the global spending of $785 billion, according to research by brokerage firm Angel Broking.
The research also looks at 13 of the top global IT outsourcers — eight MNCs and five Indian — and finds that the Indian outsourcers' share in the total revenues of the 13 companies has risen from 7.7% in fiscal 2007 to 14.3% in fiscal 2012, and that of the MNCs has dipped correspondingly from 92.3% to 85.7%.
Angel Broking's report explains Indian companies' gains saying that although the labour cost advantage for Indian IT had been on a declining trend, there still was a comfortable 20-25% cost saving for clients along with availability of a young workforce.

Facebook best place to work: Survey

Apparently Mark Zuckerberg isn't liked just among his 17 million followers on Facebook. Of nearly 200,000 CEOs reviewed in the past year on job site Glassdoor.com, Facebook's chief executive had the highest employee approval rating on the latest rankings of 50 CEOs, at 99.3%.
Not coincidentally, Facebook also ranked as the best place to work on Glassdoor. Rounding off the five highest-rated chief executives: Software company SAP's Bill McDermott and Jim Hagemann Snabe (98.6%), McKinsey's Dominic Barton (97%), Ernst & Young's Jim Turley (96%), and John Schlifske of Northwestern Mutual (96%).

While Facebook's offices burst with love for their leader, investors might have a different view. Despite strong fourth-quarter results, the company's stock price is down about 30% since its IPO in May 2012. As a majority of Zuckerberg's wealth is tied to the stock, his own net worth fell about $6.3 billion in that time, according to data from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index .
Sam Hamadeh, head of research firm PrivCo, told the Los Angeles Times in August the young executive "is in over his hoodie as CEO of a multi billion-dollar public company."

Glassdoor spokesman Scott Dobroski says the ranking reflects employees' confidence in leadership, which is not always tied directly to financial results. Rather, it indicates employees' belief that the company is being led in the right direction, that the CEO has a clear vision of the future, and that the vision and plan to achieve it are clearly communicated.

‘Cyberattack on South Korea came from Chinese IP'

A hacking attack on the servers of South Korean broadcasters and banks originated from an IP address based in China, officials in Seoul said, raising suspicions the intrusion came from North Korea.
An unnamed official from South Korea's presidential office was quoted by the Yonhap news agency as saying the discovery of the IP address indicated Pyongyang was responsible for the attack.
A previous attack on a South Korean newspaper that the government in Seoul traced back to North Korea also used a Chinese IP address.
"We've identified that a Chinese IP is connected to the organizations affected," a spokesman for South Korea's Communications Commission told a press conference.
The attack brought down the network servers of television broadcasters YTN, MBC and KBS as well as two major commercial banks, Shinhan Bank and NongHyup Bank. South Korea raised its alert levels in response.

Google chairman highlights Indian government‘s mistake

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has warned that India is lagging badly behind in harnessing the power of the internet because of its failure to invest in high-speed telecom networks.
"It is well behind in the web services model that the rest of the world is adopting," Schmidt told the CNBC-TV18 television channel late on Wednesday during a trip to India.
"It is crucial for India to invest and enable fast fibre internet connectivity within the country, between the country and the other countries," he added.
When asked to explain why only 150 million out of 1.2 billion Indians had access to the internet, he said that the government had perhaps grown complacent due to the country's success in producing large software and IT companies.
"My guess would be that having been satisfied with the great success of IT, the Indian government and the leadership has made the same mistake that companies do, they rested on their own laurels," he said.
Experts say India has enjoyed a telecom revolution that has brought cheap mobile phones to the majority of the country, but fast internet connections remain limited to a small minority in cities.

Radio frequency chip makers tune in to smartphone race

Radio frequency chip makers are set to gain as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc unveil ever more sophisticated smartphones and tablets to battle for the No. 1 spot in the global mobile devices market.
Investors and analysts say they like shares of RF Micro Devices Inc, Skyworks Solutions Inc and Avago Technologies Ltd - companies that make the chips that enable gadgets to send and receive data wirelessly.
Samsung unveiled its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, in New York on Thursday. The S4 can stop and start videos when someone looks at the screen, flip between songs at the wave of a hand and record sound to accompany pictures.
As manufacturers improve and add new features to phones, which are increasingly used to stream music, video and games, they are boosting the RF chip technology used in the devices.
"The RF content in handsets continues to go up," said Stewart Stecker, a portfolio manager at AlphaOne Capital. "That's good from an immediate to longer-term perspective for the entire RF supply chain."

Samsung Galaxy S4 blitz may prompt Apple rethink

Samsung's newest, feature-packed Galaxy S4 may put pressure on Apple Inc to accelerate its pace of smartphone design and venture into cheaper devices - both departures from usual practice.
The latest Galaxy, unwrapped with much fanfare in New York on Thursday, out-does the iPhone in most technical aspects. But the challenges it encapsulates run deeper than just a simple specifications comparison.
"It would be overstatement to say Apple is far behind," Charles Golvin, analyst with Forrester, said, but it does need to note the quickening pace of competitive devices being released.
"If anything, what Apple needs to respond to is the cadence of their own releases, probably a completely new design every two years and a sort of speed bump every year is not an adequate cadence for Apple to remain at the forefront of smartphone innovation today."
Samsung's apparent ability to go toe-to-toe with Apple on cutting-edge smartphones may prompt the U.S. titan to finally make its own assault on the lower-end of the market that it has famously stayed away from -- not least to get into untapped markets like China and India.
Many analysts now say Apple has to respond in force to Samsung and other rivals that are grabbing attention. Much of Wall Street is now looking ahead to the next iPhone, but expectations are muted.
Once the darling of Wall Street, Apple has in six months seen its shares fall 30 percent from a high of $705. Its Maps software was panned for inaccuracies; its once-reliable financial results, that rarely failed to surpass Wall Street estimates, missed analysts' expectations.

5 great alternatives to Google Reader

Google Reader is shutting down, folks, and aside from a few petitions that may or may not, but definitely won’t work, there’s nothing we can really do. The die has been cast. The moving finger has writ. Hannibal has crossed the alps. Google Reader will be no more starting on July 1. Thankfully, though, Google is giving us a generous grace period to go out and seek other means of RSS aggregation, and we have a few suggestion that you may want to consider as you go on your quest.
The Old Reader
The Old Reader is often forgotten about, but it’s a minimalistic and simple RSS reader that gets the job done. However, the interface also looks a lot like Google Reader, giving you just the information you need in a simple and straightforward layout. However, there’s no mobile apps to access your feeds on the go, so you’re tied to your web browser.

Mozilla rolls out Firefox OS Simulator version 3.0, adds Push to Device

In the middle of December 2012, Mozilla launched Firefox OS Simulator version 1.0, which was followed up a short time later with the release of version 2.0. Less we get bored waiting, the company has now rolled out the 3.0 version, which it calls “rough around the edges.” Among other things, Push to Device has been added.
Despite the fact that it is still a work in progress, Mozilla said it wanted to launch the latest version so that the community can test it out and contribute in the form of feedback and such, as well providing openness so that enthusiasts can stay updated on the company’s progress. The features that have been added to the simulator are the by-product of user feedback.
Perhaps the two biggest added features are Push to Device and rotation simulation, both of which have been extensively requested by users. Push to Device allows a Firefox OS-supposed device, you can connect it with its USB data cable and push apps to the unit from the simulator. Likewise, rotation simulation is straight-forward: you can use it to rotate the simulator for landscape and portrait.
Some other features include what Mozilla says is a basic geolocation API simulation, so developers who want to include geolocation in their app can now test it. It provides both latitude and longitude values. There’s now manifest validation to check for errors, as well as a variety of stability fixes. Those interested can grab version 3.0 now from Mozilla.

BlackBerry Balance Coming to iPhone and Android

BlackBerry Balance Coming to iPhone and Android is a post by Shawn Ingram from Gotta Be Mobile.
Today BlackBerry announced that it will soon bring BlackBerry Balance to both iPhone and Android in an effort to bring its secure services to both competitor platforms.
BlackBerry calls the apps BlackBerry Secure Work Space for iOS and Android. The service includes secure apps for email, calendar, contacts, tasks, memos, secure browsing and document editing. BlackBerry links the apps to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, companies will have to use the latest BlackBerry services to deploy the apps.
BlackBerry claims the apps use BlackBerry Balance technology, which just means they are separate from the user’s personal apps and files. The BlackBerry apps won’t interfere with personal email or calendars. The technology eliminates the need for two phones, one for work and one for personal use.
The BlackBerry Secure Work Space apps will help BlackBerry compete in the era of “Bring Your Own Device,” where users increasingly want to choose their own smartphone instead of relying on work to give them one. It means that companies can still get the security of BlackBerry services without giving employees phones they probably don’t want.

How Android tablets are gaining over iPad

Shipments of tablets running Google's Android will overtake the iPad this year for the first time, research house IDC predicted, as Apple cedes more mobile market share to hard-charging rivals around the globe.
A growing variety of smaller and cheaper Android tablets from Google to Amazon.com will catch on this year with more consumers and chip away at Apple's dominance since the first iPad launched in 2010, International Data Corp said.
iPad and iPhone shipments are expected to keep growing at enviable rates, but arch-rival Samsung Electronics and others have hurt Apple with a combination of savvy marketing, greater variety and rapid technology adoption.
On Thursday, Samsung takes the wraps off the fourth generation of its flagship Galaxy, the smartphone that helped the South Korean giant knock the iPhone off its top ranking for part of last year.
A growing perception that the company co-founded by Steve Jobs may be losing its competitive edge has weighed on its shares, which have lost more than a third of their value since hitting a high in September.

Samsung Galaxy S4 official with 5-inch full-HD display, 8-core CPU

Samsung Electronics Co on Thursday premiered its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S4, which sports a bigger display and unconventional features such as gesture controls and will spearhead its effort to challenge Apple Inc on its home turf.
The phone is the first in Samsung's highly successful Galaxy S-series to make its global debut on U.S. soil, and represents another bet that consumers prefer larger screens.
The S4 which Samsung preceded with a marketing blitz that drummed up industry speculation reminiscent of some of Apple's past launches - will be available globally in the second quarter. Samsung said all major U.S. service providers will sell the phone but it kept mum on exact dates and prices.
The company was more than willing to share some of the latest Galaxy phone's capabilities: it can stop and start videos depending on whether someone is looking at the screen, flip between songs and photos at the wave of a hand, and other features not typically found on rivals' screens.
The success or failure of Samsung's latest flagship phone - the fourth in a brand launched in 2010, will be pivotal in the world's biggest smartphone maker's battle against Apple and smaller rivals to attract consumers who have a dizzying array of choices in advanced phones.
Samsung held the global launch event in the United States in the hope of regaining the lead in the crucial market. Apple's U.S. sales outstripped Samsung's for the first time in the quarter ending in December, even after Samsung spent a record $400 million on phone advertisements here last year.
While the global smartphone market's growth rate is tapering off, Samsung still derives the majority of its annual profits from Galaxy phones.

Google planning to kill passwords

Web giant Google is researching to build a more secure hardware device which in future can be used to login to a computer or an online account, thus eliminating the need for a password.
Designed in the shape of rings which can be worn on fingers, these hardware devices will aid in logging in to a computer or online account.
The search engine first revealed its plans to put an end to passwords in an academic paper published online in January.
The effort focused on having people plug a small USB key that provides their credentials into a computer.
The possibility of using special jewellery in a similar manner was mentioned in that paper.
According to Google's principal engineer, who specialises in security, Mayank Upadhyay at the RSA security conference in San Francisco last week, "Using personal hardware to log in would remove the dangers of people reusing passwords or writing them down."

Stream media from your Galaxy S3 to a Samsung Smart TV

Maybe it's not as streamlined as Apple's AirPlay, but Samsung's AllShare system is an often-overlooked feature that lets you wirelessly beam content like music, videos, and photos among your devices at a moment's notice.
So, you find a video you shot on your phone, tap a few buttons, and voila -- there it is on your TV screen.
Though AllShare lets you share media among your phone, TV, computer, and tablet, its most practical use can be harnessed by those who own both a Galaxy smartphone (like an S2 or S3), and a Samsung Smart TV. AllShare is built into both of these devices, making it easy to beam content without buying any extra hardware or downloading any apps.
If you're one of these people, the whole setup only takes about 10 minutes and will have you sharing family photos on the big screen in no time.
Step 1: Set up AllShare on your phone
First, make sure your phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It's always necessary to do this, during setup and while streaming.
Also head to Settings > More settings > Nearby devices, and check "File sharing."
Finally, launch the AllShare Play app on your phone, which can be found pre-installed in your app drawer. You'll be asked to either create an account, or sign in. If you created an account when you first set up your Samsung Smart TV, use that. Otherwise, create a new username and password.

How to extract Preview's signatures for use in other applications

The Preview application in OS X has an excellent option for capturing handwritten signatures and inserting them into PDF documents. This is great for signing forms, letters, and other items that require a signature. The process for doing so simply involves capturing a written signature with a Web cam, after which you can append them to any PDF document open in Preview.
Signatures that you associate with Preview in this manner are stored in an encrypted form, which is great for security but also means that Preview is the only program that can access them. Even though an inserted signature is resizable and can be moved around in the given PDF document, you cannot copy it or a selection that contains it from Preview to another program.

How to clean printers in OS X

Without regular use, you'll find that sooner or later you will need to run your printer through a cleaning routine to get rid of smears, stripes, or other artifacts that can sometimes greatly affect the quality of your print jobs. Most printers contain some sort of head-cleaning routine that can help you do this, and while invoking these options can often be done via onboard printer controls, the ability to do so in OS X has been somewhat diminished.
While in the past some printer manufacturers issued drivers and utilities that contained controls for running cleaning routines, many now rely on Apple's CUPS and Gutenprint drivers for support in OS X, which largely do not contain options for invoking cleaning tools.
Even though it is not available in Apple's standard interfaces for printer management, if you would like to clean your printer then you may be able to do so using an alternative interface.

Apple's print system is the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS), which started as a project to bring a unified printing structure to Unix-based systems. Part of this project is a Web-based configuration interface that offers detailed configuration options for managing all aspects of the CUPS service, with one option being the ability to send a printer the command for cleaning its print heads.

How to run Windows 8 apps on the desktop with ModernMix

Windows 8 apps are meant to be run from the Windows 8 Start screen and in full-screen mode. You can snap them to the side of the Start screen, but they're still limited to the Start screen. If you're simultaneously using desktop programs and apps, you'll have to toggle between your desktop and Start screen to use them. This inefficient back and forth can be alleviated with the use of a program called ModernMix. ModernMix, just released by StarDock as a public beta, aims to give Windows 8 users the flexibility to run Windows 8 apps right on the desktop.
To get ModernMix, go to StarDock's Web site and request the download link by e-mail. Once you've downloaded and installed ModernMix, you'll see the configuration window. To launch Windows 8 apps as windowed apps on the desktop, choose the right-most option. You can also choose the middle option, which launches the app in a maximized window on the desktop.

Slate 7: HP's 7-inch budget Android tablet announced at $169

Hewlett-Packard is making a tablet computer that uses Google's Android operating system, steering clear of Microsoft's latest tablet-oriented version of Windows, the company said on Sunday. The HP Slate 7 will have a 7-inch screen, making it similar in size to the Amazon Kindle Fire. It will cost $169 when it goes on sale in April in the US. Alberto Torres, who signed on as head of HP's mobile devices division five months ago said the Slate 7 will use a relatively "vanilla" version of Android. The company is avoiding the interface modifications Asian manufacturers apply and the deeper changes imposed by Amazon and Barnes & Noble for their tablets. At $169 the device is aggressively priced, costing half of what Apple charges for an iPad mini.

Facebook will reportedly launch content-specific news feeds

Facebook will reportedly unveil on Thursday new ways for people to filter their news feeds.
The changes will include a photos feed of users' Facebook and Instagram images, as well as a music feed that will allow people to share what they are listening to, sources tell Tech Crunch. Bigger images are also expected in the Web and mobile versions.
The revamped news feed design will allow users to choose among different content-specific feeds, these sources said. A revamped music feed will include information about what tunes friends are listening to on streaming services such as Spotify and Rdio, as well as offer concert schedules and information about new albums.
The changes are also said to include larger images and link posts, especially for ads. Tech Crunch says ads "will become more vivid and noticeable," which presumably is part of the company's efforts to wring more revenue from the Web as people increasingly access the network on mobile devices.
CNET has contacted Facebook for comment and will update this report when we learn more.
The social network sent out invitations late last week that invited the media to "come see a new look for News Feed." The invitations were sent the same day that a new look for Timeline was spotted in New Zealand, a country where Facebook typically tests new features. The layout sported a single-column for all the posts and updates on the user's Timeline, instead of two columns.

Google Begins Mapping Japan's Nuclear Exclusion Zone

Two years after Japan's worst nuclear disaster displaced 21,000 residents of Namie, much of the town remains the same.
Just miles from the Fukushima nuclear plant, roofs that collapsed from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake still litter roads. Newspapers from March 12, 2011 - the day after disaster struck – are stacked high at the paper's office. There are shells of homes, but no sign of life inside.
The desolation has largely been hidden from public view, behind checkpoints set up to cordon off the government mandated nuclear exclusion zone. But Google is hoping to bring the displaced residents back home – at least virtually – using its street view technology.
The tech giant began today the process of digitally mapping neighborhoods closest to the nuclear plant, dispatching its street view car to Namie for the first time. With a specialized camera mounted atop its vehicle, Google drove through the empty town, steering around collapsed homes and cracked roads to capture a 360 view of the damage.
ABC News accompanied Google in its mapping route today. No special clothing is worn, but the crew was out of zone within three hours.

Samsung-Google friction is the reason behind Tizen push

There is a general feeling among the Android cognoscenti that Samsung is bad for Google. Most Android fans know that Samsung no longer markets its phones as Android. They either say Android-based or just say TouchWiz or Nature UX. This, despite the fact that Samsung sells the most Android smartphones in the world.

There’s of course nothing wrong with what Samsung is doing, lest this be mistaken for a complaint. As long as Samsung complies with the General Public License (GPL) terms and conditions, they are free to market their phones however they want. But its dominance of the market could have scared Google. Samsung sells about 40 percent of all devices that use Android as the OS and Google is reportedly worried that the Korean company’s Galaxy line of smartphones could grow larger than Android itself.

Google’s Motorola acquisition is seen as an answer to protect itself from such a situation becoming a reality. Google now has the manufacturing units that were previously owned by Motorola and can combine it with the software knowhow to release their own line of smartphones instead of the annual Nexus refresh. If, and this is a big if, the Mountain View company also manages to price these like it does the Nexus phones, then Samsung could have a real fight on its hands. As things stand, there is a slight tension in the air between the two companies, but things could get more intense.

Yahoo preparing to shut down 7 services

It looks like the work-at-home program isn’t the only program Yahoo is shutting down. Yahoo is also planning on shutting down 7 other products that aren’t bringing in the kind of success Yahoo needs right now. Along with these products, Yahoo also plans on reducing their number of mobile apps from 60-75 to a measly 12-15 apps. Jay Rossiter, Yahoo’s executive VP of Platforms, stated, “The most critical question we ask is whether the experience is truly a daily habit that still resonates for all of you today.”
The 7 products that are set to be discontinued include: Yahoo App Search, Yahoo Sports IQ, Yahoo Clues, Yahoo Message Boards, Yahoo Updates API, Yahoo Avatars, and the Yahoo app for Blackberry. The Blackberry app will continue to be listed in the Blackberry App World until April 1st. Then it will no longer be available for download, and it will no longer receive any support from Yahoo.
Yahoo’s Avatar might be the biggest hit to Yahoo users. Many Yahoo users create their own cartoon-like avatars to use for instant messaging, and for e-mailing. If you check the Yahoo Answers boards, a majority of user icons are their custom avatar icons, which makes me wonder why a service like that isn’t successful. Yahoo says that users who still want to keep their avatars must download their avatar image and manually re-upload it as their profile picture.

Price of cheaper iPhone revealed

iPhone's cheaper version has not even been officially confirmed yet, but the price of the supposed smartphone is allegedly out.
There are a number of rumours floating, but according to one report in Japanese blog Macotakara, Apple is trying to keep its price tag at $330.
The blog says the company would be using polycarbonate, instead of glass and aluminium in the body casing. The material will be similar to the one used in Apple's entry-level Macbook that has now been discontinued.
This material is glossy, will make the rumoured cheaper iPhone thicker and also sturdier than iPhone 5.
There was also word on iPhone 5S, the follow-up to the company's current flagship smartphone. This device will reportedly sport dual-LED flash, wherein one will be placed on top of the other. The blog also said that Apple has pushed the development of the iPhone with 4.5-inch touchscreen to 2014.
Previously, it was reported that Apple is working on an iPhone 5 successor that will have new features like snappier processor, fingerprint sensor, 13MP camera and more powerful LED flash. Allegedly leaked photos of the device under various stages of development have also surfaced online.

BlackBerry 10 gets first update: Battery life and low-light camera fixes, more

BlackBerry has pushed out the first update for the BlackBerry Z10, promising improvements in battery life, multimedia and third-party app performance, and enterprise features around calendars and contacts. The new firmware, a 150MB download, is being released as an OTA update, and according to BlackBerry has been pieced together primarily in response to consumer feedback from the first month of reports.
One of the most important changes will be to battery life, with BlackBerry saying that it has wrapped up more than 60 optimizations to try to address complaints. Poor runtimes from the Z10 were one of our key complaints when we reviewed the smartphone, with it often failing to make it through a full day. “Heavy users especially should see a longer average usage per charge cycle” BlackBerry claims, though gives no specifics as to what has changed.
Elsewhere, there should be improved low-light performance from the camera, another point of contention among early-adopters, who felt the Z10′s shots were simply too dark. The way BlackBerry 10 deals with call logging and conversations has also been tweaked, and there’s a fix for using Google Calendars on the platform. Pulling in contacts from online databases is also smoothed.
Video playback in the browser has been refined, and BlackBerry has also fettled the third-party app environment. That should be “fast and smooth” now, the company says, pointing out that a new influx of titles – such as WhatsApp – is expected in March.

Kaspersky Lab identifies malware MiniDuke

Kaspersky Lab's team of experts recently published a new research report that analyzed a series of security incidents involving the use of the recently discovered PDF exploit in Adobe Reader (CVE-2013-6040) and a new, highly customized malicious programme known as MiniDuke. The MiniDuke backdoor was used to attack multiple government entities and institutions worldwide during the past week, said the lab's press release. Kaspersky Lab's experts, in partnership with CrySys Lab, analyzed the attacks in detail and published their findings.

MiniDuke's highly customized backdoor was written in assembler and is very small in size, being only 20kb. "The combination of experienced old school malware writers using newly discovered exploits and clever social engineering to compromise high profile targets is extremely dangerous," said the statement issued by the lab.

It said that the MiniDuke attackers are still active at this time and have created malware as recently as February 20. To compromise victims, the attackers used extremely effective social engineering techniques, which involved sending malicious PDF documents to their targets.

Now, buy books from Google

Google on Thursday started selling books through its Android Play store in India. Google's decision to start selling content in India through the Play store comes nearly three months after Apple, which competes with Google in the smartphone and tablet market, introduced iTunes content store.
However, unlike iTunes store that sells music and films - but not books - in India, Google is selling only books for now. But sources say the company realizes India is an important smartphone and tablet market and going forward it is likely to add more content to the Play store.
"Just under one year ago, we introduced Google Play. Today we're adding books to Google Play for people in India. Books on Google Play now offers thousands of Indian titles, from new releases to classics," a Google official wrote on the company's blog.
